I was talking with an acquaintance the other day and since I build websites, they happened to mention not getting many visits to their website. This person went on to say that they didn’t believe it was worth all the expense.
So, my first question was, how much are you paying to have a website? I found out that the only expense this person had was just hosting, because they had built the website. In the whole scheme of things, this was just a drop in a bucket.
It also raised a red flag to me. I had them give me the name of the site, looked it up as we were talking and asked them if they could handle some constructive criticism about the site.
I told them that main problem with the site was it looked like an “amateur” built it. If you are trying to impress potential clients and customers by being professional, an amateur website is NOT the way to do it!
I actually have had this same conversation with numerous people from clients to those who find out I build websites. This has to be my number one pet peeve, amateur looking websites and then they wonder why they don’t work.
Here’s how I explain it to these people. Let’s say you have an electrical issue in your home that really requires a licensed electrician, but since you “think” you know how to fix the problem, you do it. Then the house burns down because of an electrical fire.
I always believe you should hire “professionals” to do a job. Of course people come back with “well it’s cheaper if I do it.” True, but in the case above, a family’s safety is much more important than a few extra bucks.
You or your business is worth of few extra buck to give you that professional look you need in a website as well.
The problem is most people don’t realize what the Internet or websites really are. The Internet is a form of media….nothing more. Your website is a means of advertising or marketing yourself or your business via this media.
Many people and businesses used the yellow pages for this, but the sad fact is now, whenever someone wants to find out any information, look for a service or basically anything, they go directly to the Internet and do a search. So yellow pages aren’t as viable as they once where.
I also believe too many people have been watching “Field of Dreams” and believe in “if you build it they will come’….sorry, doesn’t happen that way with websites unless you know what you’re doing.
Which brings up the other point, most of these people that build their own website (or have their mother’s uncle’s son once removed do it) think that all you have to do is put up a few website pages and “BINGO” a website.
WRONG!!! So much more involved.
An important fact to remember is that the website represents you or your company. If you want to portray a professional image, you want a professional website and to get one you need a professional to build it for you.
Remember this someone comes to your site for the first time… you don’t get a second chance at a first impression.
When building a website, it much more than just a few pages of information about your or your company. Your website should be a complete marketing system for you or your company.
Bottom line, get someone that understands marketing and building websites to build yours (or if you already have one, to help you modify it) so it will work for you!
